For the most part, rap music is way more interesting now than it was ten years ago. Not a day goes by that I miss G-Unit, Ludacris, or Ja Rule, but Missy Elliott is an exception. When she surprised everyone at the Super Bowl Halftime Show earlier this month, I was reminded again that she is sorely missed, and that Nicki Minaj has a tough job to do in trying to fill her shoes. Now, with Missy delivering an off-the wall, nothing's-changed performance over Jack Ü and Kiesza's "Take Ü There," one has to wonder if she's eyeing a comeback.
The strategy is a simple one: Missy does her usual routine of irresistibly lascivious seduction over "Take Ü There"'s thunderous drops. The collaboration is simultaneously surprising and natural, a reminder of how closely-knit the worlds of hip-hop and EDM can be. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for a full-fledged Missy Elliott return.
