Machinedrum continues to give us remnants of his 2013 masterpiece and Ninja Tune debut, Vapor City. Late last year the footwork pioneer, born Travis Stewart, released a collection of impressive outtakes, Vapor City Archives, and now he's giving away a stellar remix of "Rise N Fall" from drum and bass veteran dBridge. The remix was done a while back, "meant to be on a remix 12" that never happened unfortunately," according to Stewart. It slipped through the cracks and now it's available as a free download.
Drum and bass and footwork have their similarities, and Stewart certainly flirts with drum and bass from time to time. Still, dBridge is the textbook definition of drum and bass, so his reinvention of "Rise N Fall" plants it firmly in the genre in a way that Machinedrum never would. He trades in the original's clattering rhythm for something a little more direct, and adds jolts of dissonant string sounds among the ghostly vocals. Get lost in yet another back alley of "Vapor City."
