You’re not going to need to pull to the side of the road with this song, because the latest offering from Glasgow duo Nieves’ self-titled EP is the type of track you want to drive to.
A few years ago my friend and I made-up the category: “tree songs.” The genre was born on a road-trip to Salem, MA for a half-marathon – a trek that took us down winding roads through thick fall foliage. We realized there’s just a very specific soundtrack to that. And “Sirens” fits the bill.
It’s the keys work c/o pianist Herre de Leur and the gravelly vocals of singer/songwriter Brendan Dafter – who has a drama reminiscent to Elliott Smith or Conor Oberst and an urgency on par with Frightened Rabbit that reminds me of reckless youth, driving aimlessly, taking turns a little too fast, and just why I love lyrics and folk music so much.
“Sirens"’ emotive emboldened sound gives off a crackling, constant warmth like embers left glowing in an overnight campfire. We don’t have snow yet in New York, but if we did it would be melting. It ends with the lyrics “As we huddled together in the cold and the dark / the night isn’t over yet / Let’s live together and choose how we finish out / Sirens came closing in.”
