"'Fortress' is the kind of record you might hear on the set of a sweaty 70s porno flick…" You might think this is an absurd way to start a press release, but trust me, it's effective. Also, it's surprisingly not the first time I've seen something like that. What drives a person to describe music in such a way? A funky bassline, creamy vocals, and a suggestive animated video is all you need.
Coleman Hell, of Toronto based collective sideways, hits a high note amidst a sultry bass line. Accompanied by some vibrant animated visuals courtesy of fellow sideways member Dustbuster. "Think MGMT meets Chromeo meets Prince." sideways sure knows the right way to describe their tunes.
There's an obvious resurgence in 70s funk music (most of the releases we hear nowadays are a type of electronic fusion with funk), but it's refreshing to hear something that truly does dig back to the roots. It's romance rhythm at its finest, and Coleman has a voice not many are blessed to have. On top of that he pulls in a fellow artist/colleague to do the animated video, and it knocks the sex appeal out of the park! I love the flickering patterns within the bikini bottoms, a simple yet unseen piece of art.
