Music began as an art form which usage consisted primarily of telling stories and experiences of one’s culture and or personal experiences. Recently, EARMILK featured the work of up-and-coming Atlanta rapper-singer-producer Russ, whose knack for elegant production and songwriting caught our attention. On Russ’s most recent video release “Gypsy,” Russ capitalizes on these abilities, specifically that of storytelling, as he crafts a touching, minimal ode to a girl that he fraternized with for many years. The video, directed by Colm Dillane of KidSuper, reflects the minimal nature of the production as it is set in a run-down and bare building complex in Brooklyn. Russ’s lyrics and bars are accentuated by the strip-down instrumental, as he raps about the troubling past of this certain girl as a female dancer acts out the story by performing an interpretive dance.

Both the track and the video do what they set out to get across; they touch the heart and mind of the listener in the most stark sense. If you enjoyed the video above, be sure to follow Russ on Soundcloud and support him by downloading his most recent album Silence. Also, keep it locked to EARMILK for all things Russ as he is set to release a new project in the coming months.
