The state of Minnesota hasn't had much to cheer lately. Their baseball team, The Twins, have one of the worst records in the MLB, whereas their basketball team the Minnesota Timberwolves, look set to lose their star man in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, just as the impending arrival of a certain future NBA star in Andrew Wiggins brings a ray of hope to the good people of The North Star State, it seems that their music scene is also thriving.
One of the shining lights of a re-emerging hip hop scene in Minnesota is the extremely talented Spooky Black. The St Paul native, whose Black Silk EP caused huge stirs among music lovers when it first dropped earlier this year (alongside an interesting video for the single "Without U"), has been dropping snippets of different joints over on his Soundcloud the past few months, as well as appearing on fellow Minnesotan Psymun's project Pink Label. With 2014 flying by at an incredible speed, we've been treated to a brand new EP from Lil Spook, and it's just as atmospherically brilliant as his first! Weighing in at 8 tracks deep, Leaving see's Spooky Black picking up the mantle where he left off, as his own depressingly beautiful brand of R&B continues to strike a chord amongst music lovers. Every track on Leaving is a downtempo, sentimental banger, that showcases the unique nature of Spooky's voice to perfection. This allows him to reel off his distressing, heartbreak-tinged lyrics in a way that not only fits the mould, but somehow keeps you hooked on every last word he sings. This project is more ammunition for Spooky to use to cement his status as one of the more unique artists on the come-up this year, and I have no doubt in my mind that this heartbroken teen from St Paul, is destined for big things.
