It’s been a while since we’ve seen a release from Dutch producer Martijn Deykers, better known as Martyn; his last full length, Ghost People, was put out by Brainfeeder in 2011. He’s coming out of hibernation now, with a new EP, Forgiveness, out now, as well as a fresh full-length, The Air Between Words, due June 16.
Martyn has moved to a new label, Ninja Tune, and with this change comes a pretty major tweak to his sound. In the past he’s been a mixer and matcher of various strains of EDM, cooking up batches of abrasive, propulsive techno with dashes of dubstep thrown in. However, as his latest track “Love of Pleasure” shows, he’s chilled out a bit, instead opting to build a comfortable, downtempo environment for former Hype Williams vocalist (Inga) Copeland out of piano and swirling texture. “Has there ever been a thing that we do in vain? That we do for the love of pleasure?” she wonders. I’d say she hits the nail on the head as to why we listen to music in the first place.
Check out Martyn’s Forgiveness EP now, and be on the lookout for The Air Between Words in the near future.
