Azizi Gibson is a refreshingly humble rapper, as is evident in the quirky, comedically self-deprecating lyrics of his new track, the Kamandi-produced “Crown Violet.” “My shoes don’t fit,” “my breath stinks,” “my phone don’t work,” he laments. No wonder Gibson is such a great fit for Brainfeeder, a label churning out great music, but hardly known for inflated, larger-than-life personas. Still, rappers thrive on energy not lethargy, and just as one wishes that the creative but sluggish “Crown Violet” couldn’t be at least a little more of a banger, out of nowhere Kamandi unleashes an incredible beat drop and the track explodes with some serious firepower.
Gibson just finished touring in support of labelmates The Underachievers, and has hinted that “Crown Violet” will be on a new album out later in the year, hopefully with some contributions from other Brainfeeder artists. If the production is as impressive as Kamandi’s work here on “Crown Violet,” the album will be well worth the wait.
