Chicago’s north side-based collective SAVEMONEY is back at it again with the release of  Porno Music Vol Two: This Shit Fuckin Raw by Leather Corduroys. Leather Corduroys is a rap duo made up of SAVEMONEY members Kami de Chukwu and Joey Purp. Recently, this collective has been on the rise with the critically acclaimed releases of Acid Rap by Chance the Rapper, which propelled Chance to the top of the hip-hop industry and has established him as one of the genre’s most promising young stars, and Vic Mensa’s Innanetape. Now that the group has caught the eye of the Hip-Hop community, Chukwu and Purp are vying to prove their own right to a share of the spotlight.  That is what the venture that is Leather Corduroys has set out to prove.

PMVT starts off with the track “Bleed”, which features solely Kami de Chukwu rapping over a re-appropriated instrumental version of Rihanna’s “Stay” produced by III, who also produces a majority of the EP. Chukwu flexes his lyrical ability with cleverly constructed lines like “Teriyaki, the bottles pour up, that’s plenty sake/Shrimps was cut, the suit’s Versace, that’s Liberace”. Following “Bleed” is  “Dat Strong”, a mesmerizing, dark track that showcases the rapping prowess of both SAVEMONEY members. Together these tracks set the ominous, raw tone of the EP that carries through its entirety.

The track “Nightmare on Chicago Ave” best expresses the forbidding tone of the tape, as it is an ode to the violence and terror that predominates Chicago. The EP culminates with Joey Purp’s solo cut “Irie Trill Vibes”, a banger that contains all the elements characteristic of the Chicago drill sound. Purp unleashes a visceral hook as he raps, “Say she gon turn me up, wipe me down/ Who gon stop me now? Who gon stop me now? / Gold chain on my neck all I do is flex”. To answer Purp’s question “Who gon stop me now” I would argue nobody seeing that Leather Corduroys' ability to flex is undeniable.

Leather Corduroys' raw and aggressive aesthetic adds a new dimension to SAVEMONEY's collective sound. With the release of PMVT, Purp and Chukwu are that much closer to achieving their share of the spotlight.
