It’s always nice when an artist surprises us with a video for a track which we almost forgot about. Killer Mike has done just that by lifting a banger from his huge 2012 mixtape R.A.P Music and pairing expertly shot, filmic visuals with “Ghetto Gospel”. The track feels so much bigger as it bumps under the story of a priest enduring a battle between the two contrasting sides of his life. The variety of amped up religious scenes plays into the struggle of Mike’s character as the Trevor Kane and Carlos Haynes directed video manages to make a normal church Sunday feel like a chemically enhanced experience with flashes of colour and quick camera cuts. Mike’s journey also takes him to the hood, a graveyard and a strip club. The rapper’s angst in “Ghetto Gospel” is symbolised as he stands in water up to his waist, trying to stay above the waves and his own urges. Thanks to this mini-masterpiece many of us will surely be revisiting R.A.P Music and looking forward to more standout work from the Atlanta rapper and one half of Run The Jewels.
