Ever since the official retirement of Swedish House Mafia, there’s been a heavy focus on releases from the Size Records team. The anticipated three-chord house sound has been executed well with singles like Moguai’s “Champs” and label boss Steve Angello’s own “SLVR”, but the imprint has also supported drum-heavy sounds a bit off the beaten path. “Liceu”, “Jumangee”, and “BOOM!” all boast tribal drum lines that hit hard and even bridge a unique sound to the festival-sized stage. What's more, Angello and company have curated the spinoff label X, focused on the deeper, tech-driven sounds that still carry throbbing bass.
Size’s latest single, “Without You” follows this same formula, and comes via Junior Sanchez with the help of CeCe Peniston, whose name is familiar from the unforgettable 1991 hit “Finally”. The breakdown carries a gentle synth line, allowing CeCe’s airy, soulful vocals to crescendo before a thick drum pattern acts as both melody and bass. With a number of IDs from the label set for release later in the year, including tracks from Max Vangeli, AN21, and Angello himself, this is a strong start to 2014 for the entire Size family.
