Chill…
How did J.K The Reaper slip past our radar? With his free flowing rhyme scheme and witty wordplay, "Mental Interstate/Tear Filled Oceans" presents an interesting duality in regards to the Greensboro rapper's approach to the traditional chilled-out sounding track. While the beginning features a nice juxtaposition of laid back beats with some braggadocious, albeit humble, affirmations ("I'm throwing 16 mix tapes and you can't write 16 bars/16 bitches want to get in my car/I don't even got one, let me drive yours,) the interlude at the 2:15 mark allows the listener to fill in the gaps and vibe with the spaced out instrumental supplied by Fuego. A self described "skinny loser with no hopes and a couple dreams," he breaths fresh air in a scene where rappers have whored out the very concept of how a stripped back track should come together, making it a dime a dozen affair. Peep the video down below and someone tell J.K. we said "what up".
