Bat and Ball – "Tails" [Premiere]

It seems like being a male/female electro-pop duo is all the rage lately. From GEMS to MS MR and one of our recent faves, Young Wonder, we’re definitely on board with this trend. Whereas the aforementioned bands possess hypnotic trance tracks reminiscent of dancing in a dream, London brother/sister duo Bat & Ball (Chris and Abi Sinclair) are more like a beating heart after waking up in the dark.

Their debut EP is aptly titled We Prefer It in the Dark and comes out on October 14, but we are premiering the perfect electric bolt of a song to help get through a Friday before LDW.

"Tails" is literally about chasing tails and licking wounds, but the self-deprecation ends there. While mildly melancholy in nature, the track delivers a livelier variation of The xx's style with an Alt-J influenced intro and a Lorde-like overall vibe. The soundscapes are unexpected and the vocals are jolting–Abi Sinclair’s voice hits harder than any cup of coffee, including the typical jitter-inducing cup found in the city.

The lyrics are simple but the emotion of the track builds with the intense telepathic harmonies of Chris and Abi. The song never gets overly complicated, ending at the climax without evening finishing out the sentence. And here we are, left wide-awake, wondering if we’ll ever be able to go back to sleep.
