I could have done without the male stripper in a thong, but The Stepkids brought forth a funky track courtesy of the always magnificent Stones Throw Records. Featuring some questionable dancing and a trombone, this very much feels Mayer Hawthorne-esque circa his A Strange Arrangement days with the same label. If there is one thing besides the untraditional hip hop they cultivate over there, they sure seem to know how to make soulful music competing with the likes of the biggest mainstream acts.
The Stepkids will release their album, Troubadour, on September 10, although the track is available on iTunes now. They also have some big shows coming up, including EDC this week and a free show in Brooklyn in August.
