With many artists we've started off 2013 wondering what the year will hold, and awaiting to see what's next. But Armin van Buuren has had quite a year, and it's barely mid-February. After being voted the #1 DJ in the world by the readers of DJ Mag, announcing his A State of Trance 600 world tour and selling out Madison Square Garden, he's released his annual compilation album, A State of Trance 2013.
Partnering with many of the artists joining the A State of Trance 600: The Expedition tour, van Buuren's compilation includes both recently released tracks and exclusive new music that will surely be the soundtrack to what we're going to hear from the live sets in the tour. As expected, veterans like Alex M.O.R.P.H. and Beat Service make appearances, but we also see artists who have been a bit quiet over the past year, like The Blizzard, and we're happy to see their return. Always keeping an eye on the newest and most promising talent, van Buuren and this album help us get a glimpse into the next big thing in trance (like his own favorite, Andrew Rayel).
Beyond the collaboration, the best part of this album is the range of sound it covers. In recent years, the depth in the different sounds that trance has developed is completely represented on A State of Trance 2013. Ranging from harder electro trance to the trippy uplifting and the softer sounds of Euro trance, we get everything that's appropriate for the club or for a chance to relax.
Released today on Armada Recordings, this marks the start of an exciting time for avid trance fans, one that some wait for all year. And for those not familiar, it's the perfect opportunity to take a first listen. Today marked the start of the A State of Trance tour in Madrid, and was a reminder of the absolute quality that comes from this tour. Sets from the likes of Lange and Giuseppi Ottoviani among others provided not only songs from the A State of Trance 2013 album for a listen, but fantastic mashups and new IDs that gave us an exciting preview for what's to come in the remaining shows over the next few weeks.
This tour and album release truly celebrates Armin van Buuren as an artist and performer. Over 12 years of producing his radio show that now approaches 600 episodes has allowed him extreme influence on the dance music community, and the live shows and broadcasts will surely prove to us once again why this is the case. If you're not able to make it to one of the ASOT stops, you can listen live for hours on end at AStateofTrance.com every week.
