Homeboy Sandman – "Couple Bars" [Video]

Couple bars is putting it modestly. Homeboy Sandman, perhaps hip-hop's most underrated emcee in this modern market, has about a gazillion of them. Whether rhyming about Sputnik, the Illuminati, or professing his newfound interest for a dame, the half-boy-half-man approaches a beat like he does a woman: on-point and smooth like a criminal.

That's not surprising, considering that the Elmhurst, Queens-emcee is a law school dropout. And he didn't drop out for lack of knowledge, but for an overwhelming love of hip-hop. It shows, as he has a prehensile flow that wraps itself around any beat (not to mention that he has a Black Thought crush). His style, in a sense, could be said to be whatever style is appropriate at the moment, making him a rare breed.

Is Sandman guilty of aggressive flirtation? Looking at the clip for "Couple Bars", might make you think so, but given his track record, and overall dedication to furthering his brethren, probably not. The whimsical melody and disconnected demeanor of his muse suggests he's but a figment of her contemplation. And the track was inspired by a vivid dream and not necessarily a love interest.

But you tell us. Peep the vid below and let us know what you think.
