Saturday was outstanding. I mean, Dada Life, Avicii, Gareth Emery AND Benny Benassi, on top of a slew of other talented artists- all on the same day? If you put together a line up like that it's going to be a good show, no matter what the venue. Like Friday, the bass on Saturday was unbelievable. Like both days previous, Saturday's performances were on key.
Dada Life (performing on the Scion Bass Stage) put on quite a show. They dropped some of their more famous tracks, like "Cookies With a Smile" and "Unleash the F**king Dada," as well as a few remixes and some dirty DnB. Dada Life did their part, but as the night went on- things only got better.
Avicii. Like the rest of the acts that night, Avicii was incredible. The crowd reaction he got was impressive, and his bass. Was. DIS-GUS-TING. Seeing Avicii play that night was more like having someone bang pots for ten hours around your head. Except the pots aren't pots- they're humongous speakers, and the person blasting the bass isn't your angry mother waking you up for grade school- it's one of the more masterful DJ's in the biz. You couldn't sleep during this performance if you wanted to.
Avicii disappeared and Gareth Emery replaced him. Not much else to say about that- except for well, you know- it was Gareth Emery. His set was no less impressive than anything else that night, and about half way through I found myself unable to maintain control of my body. After taking the pictures I made may my way into the crowd, and if you had seen me there you would have witnessed a overly excited little white boy jumping around like a cracked out chimpanzee. In what I had grown accustomed to expect from the performances at GDF, Gareth Emery was fantastic. When he played "Sanctuary" the crowd lost it. It was an all out f**king party.
Benny Benassi: The Legend. The man with the most experience performing, he was given the honor to close off the three epic days at Red Rocks. His performance had amazing energy, and was easily one of the best of the entire festival. By the time he started his set, those of us who had been there all three days had already logged in over 25 hours of dancing. Benny took our legs and gave them new life. After putting on an already incredible show, he stopped the music, thanked Skrillex for remixing his hit track "Cinema" and then proclaimed "I Love dubstep." That's right, a 46 year old man from Italy rocks out to Dubstep. Along with "Cinema" he ended his performance with two new dubstep tracks, including his own remix to James Blake's "Limit To Your Love."
Benny Benassi may be as old as my Dad, but the guy is one of the historical greats in the industry. The fact that he's been doing this for so long and can still bring so much energy to the table really speaks to how much he loves music. And I love that he loves music- because that means he's going to continue to put out great tracks and great performances like the one on Saturday night.
