The music business is not always the first to pick up new ideas and run with them. We have seen the mighty "Big 4" labels waiver in the face of adversity, and the rise of indie's self promotion all due to the internet.
Now in L.A., a label may be ready to bring the ruckus and shake some things up.
"For fans there lies a fresh opportunity to change the way we value and understand music as a whole." writes Leeor Brown, creator of Friends of Friends.
FoF, describe themselves as a "T-Shirt Label." The idea is that when you are signed to Friends of Friends, you sign on to do a split EP with another artist of your choice. Then together, you commission an artist to create the EP's artwork on a limited edition American Apparel t-shirt. When purchased, the shirt will also be sent with a download card to get the EP, exclusive remixes, and videos.
Not only that, but they did it big on their first release in March 2009 featuring L.A.'s Daedelus and Logger and art by husband and wife duo, Kozyndan. It also features exclusive remixes from "friends" Nosaj Thing, Eliot Lipp, Grahm Zilla of Thunderheist, Michna, Mexicans with Guns, Meanest Man Contest, and Keenhouse.
Check out Friends of Friends for some solid electro, fresh shirts, and if nothing else, to see how the music business is making "friends".
