Texas act Blacktop Mojo are carving out a space for themselves with their genre-hopping rock musicality. Despite coming onto the scene around the early aughts, Blacktop Mojo boasts a sound reminiscent of classic rock, sludge metal, and Southern metal—earning them a subgenre monicker called “Texas Grunge.”
Having come to life in 2012 founded by vocalist Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis before being joined by bassist Matt Curtis and guitarists Malcolm Booher and Ryan Kiefer. the band have continue to evolve and elevate their sound which has pulled from a myriad of genres and styles to land on a medley of dirty, heavy rock and roll as well as sensual and carnal blues.
Sharing their debut album, I am in 2014, the band has keep their creative juices constantly flowing pulling from their life experiences to craft tales that feel relatable and personal all at once.
With an alluring vibe that has seem them reaping slow but steady rewards, the band blends contemporary charm with an old-school sensibility. Matt James, says, “When you come see us, you're seeing rock and roll the way it used to be.” In case anyone was wondering, he was alluding to the time before smartphones became more interesting than being in the moment during live shows. James added that the band is “a group of people on stage playing their instruments right in front of your face. No laptops, no backing tracks. What you see is what you get.”
Blacktop Mojo, who are currently touring the UK, continue to take over the music scene with their powerful musicality and authentic presence.
