Simian Mobile Disco have always gone against the grain of formulated cookie-cutter dance electronic music. Their latest album, Whorl, is no different. As if finding time to record in the studio isn't hard enough, James Ford and Jas Shaw ventured westward to a small town in Joshua Tree known as Pioneertown, originally built in 1946 as a movie, for inspiration on their next project.
Here, they decided the desert was the best place to record an album. Expansive, contemplative, and serene, J Tree provided them with the unique opportunity to venture outside of the studio and into the wild. Below is a short documentary about the project, and a little insight into what it took to create Whorl.
