Phoebe Bridgers has made good on her pre-election promise to cover the Goo Goo Doll's classic 1998 rock hit, "Iris" if Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were to win this year's presidential nomination. 307 electoral votes later, we have the sad-girl icon behind this year's Punisher teaming up with Pharrell Williams-co-signed singer-songwriter, Maggie Rogers on the cover, crescendoing from whispers.
The duo's take on the karaoke classic adds a bit of a southeastern filter to the original. A plucky medley of mandolin, violin, and guitar supports Bridgers' breathy, soft-spoken introduction. Rogers adds a bit of whisky flavor, her tremorous vocals coming through with a sort of buoyancy before the two combine for the big chorus.
The song is a fun moment to celebrate some good news in a sea of certainty, but also serves to highlight the people that made this breather possible. Stacey Abram's campaign masterclass in Georgia played a major role in the previously unthinkable purple state parity we witnessed last week. Because of this, all proceeds from the track will go to Abram's Fair Fight. The track's Bandcamp bio describes the program in saying: "Fair Fight promotes fair elections in Georgia and around the country, encourages voter participation in elections, and educates voters about elections and their voting rights."
Act fast! The bio also describes the track being exclusively available on Bandcamp this Friday the 13th. Although the track will certainly be somewhere online forever, the chance to help this cause is quickly departing.
The track is available here.
