Larry June's "Doing it for me" lets us know he's doing it for us.
Larry June's “Doing it for Me” shares records from a hustler's ambition, a smoker's heart, and keeping it P with what could be considered “Love Songs”. The production for the project flows well and caters to Larry June's organic sound of smooth and soulful but direct production with some twists of more aggressive styles. His lyricism always represents the coast where he is from, and his ambition as a man to be as smooth as possible.
His lyricism and delivery sound polished and perfected for sure. He does what he does well, displaying himself on each record drawing the listeners in track after track.
Though the music might not be classified as conscious hip-hop, it has an incredible amount of soul in each track. Vocals are crisp and clear and the records are mixed and mastered to perfection, therefore adding an extra layer of personality.
In addition, it is a very balanced project sonically and lyrically; if you're into smooth Hip-Hop, or cruising music reminiscent of driving down the boulevard in an old school this is definitely for you.
“Three Pieces” comes off with a flow that carries like a mid-80s record. However, it's quite a bit of a throwback with a definite California, Bay area flavor. Definitely a cruising record with references to cruising, with the synths adding depth to the production which he flows on effortlessly.
With a catchy and simple chorus, I can definitely see this as a major record. It fits the personality of the artist and carries the sound that allows him to represent where he’s from and what he is into. It's a smooth track with smooth lyrics and a dope flow.
“Meet Me in Napa” has a smooth soul sample with deep-sounding drums and synths on the beat. Vocals are crisp, with a mix that draws out the lyrical content, albeit, a pretty creative track with a unique feel of him spittin’ to a lady friend. Somewhere closer to the end of the record you can hear what sounds like a trumpet, beautifully played in the production.
A classic record with a good feel and presence sonically. The chorus stands out and adds an extra flavor to the subject matter at hand.
“Imported Couches” has an electric guitar played on the production giving the record extreme depth. Lyrically he fulfills his role of painting a vivid picture of being a bachelor with style and being internationally known. He’s definitely within his element and the confidence within the rhyming doesn't feel forced. Another smooth Classic track.
“Dreams” is a record with such a different sound, unique, and detailed sonically. He shows a few different flows that sound perfect to the style of production. Chorus is simple but it allows you to get into the record still and completely catch the feel. Synths are in sync with the drums and snares. The record is mixed extremely well as well and elevates the track.
“Money Bag” comes in with a soulful sample as he paints a perspective of how he feels. Smooth vocals accent as he flows on temp on the beat. Definitely a track that reminds you what he does he does well artistically. Midway in the track, he adds some harmony and melodies to add some variety to the record. The melodies don't sound forced and he hits the vocals excellently still.
Towards the end of the track it breaks down into a jazz feel with what sounds like live instruments being played then into some keys being played out until the end of the record.
