Brooklyn-based indie artist and producer mer marcum has released her debut EP You Never Did Anything Wrong.
Having just played her first-ever headline show, mer marcum is moving into a new chapter with a bang.
The seven-track collection is named after a photograph by artist Nan Goldin, an image of the tombstone of a beloved pet cat inscribed “you never did anything wrong.” Struck by that image, marcum found it stuck with her, deciding the EP needed to share that sentiment.
“I was thinking about the idea of giving yourself permission for not knowing what you’re doing,” says marcum. “Life constantly asks, ‘who are you? What will you do? Who will you be with? What will you accomplish?’ To ease that tension, it’s helpful to remember that we’re all just trying.
Inspired by her own near-death experience as well as her sister’s parallel near-death experience, You Never Did Anything Wrong is a real catharsis for marcum as she lays bare all her vulnerabilities with a sense of melancholy. It’s deeply personal in a way that meaningful art often is, and in marcum’s own words, “maybe, in doing that, someone out there will be understood.”
The EP also features contributions from Sebastian Jones (Snail Mail, Momma), Pearce Gronek (Hudson Freeman, Hollis Howard), Jake Augustine (AKA Jia*), Alejandro Meletro and Thien An Nguyen (onlydigitally), and Ellington Peet (Babehoven, Runner).
