London-born songwriter Col Gerrard unveils his debut self-titled album, a collection of twelve tracks that delve into the emotional aftershocks of relationships. Across the record, he focuses on the push and pull between two people who can’t quite say what they mean. Songs circle misread signals, pride getting in the way, and the frustration of wanting clarity but never quite getting it.
With an underlying thread of yearning running throughout, the album is honest, raw, and relatable. Tracks such as “The Way I Feel” and “What Am I Supposed To Do” wrestle with confusion and self-doubt, capturing the spiral of overthinking when love feels uncertain. Then there is the upbeat and hopeful “Place In The Sun,” where the artist offers reassurance, as well as “Nowhere,” a melancholy track that paints a stark picture of someone slipping away.
Sonically, the album leans into piano-led arrangements, steady drums, and bright guitar lines that seem to brighten the heavier themes. Recorded in London with producer Chris Potter, together they have successfully created an album which simultaneously feels full, upbeat, and infectious, whilst touching on intimate and sometimes sombre narratives.
