LA-based artist Phantom Pink has released his latest single, “Czech New Wave”.
The artist moniker for singer-songwriter Brayton Walls, “Czech New Wave,” is the latest single off his upcoming album Gothika, which is loosely based on the cult classic thriller Possession (1981).
Inspired by the film movement of the same name, Phantom Pink said: “I love how [the movement] took a very dreary, black-and-white world and turned it into a very colourful and comedic, deeply ironic world…I thought I needed something in my life.”
You don’t have to look far to see why now is the perfect time to be releasing a song about finding humour in dark and difficult times, and it brings Phantom Pink’s dark, moody style for the new year.
“Czech New Wave” is a softer, slower approach to Phantom Pink’s previous single, but equally as tense and brooding, even as the addition of the saxophone does some work to lighten the mood. As he sings: “leaves are warm / sunsets cold / I’m your puppet down the road / dare me to live” the mood is defiant: this song is a real comfort, because of – and not despite – its potentially overwhelming soundscape.
“Czech New Wave” was written and produced by Brayton Walls, mixed by Daniel Neiman, and mastered by Joe LaPorta. Kevin Scott features on saxophone, and Brayton Walls performs vocals, guitar, bass, and piano.
