Indie singer-songwriter Wes Parker has released his hypnotic new single, “Neck.”
Currently undertaking a run of headline tour dates in the lead up to the release of his upcoming EP Fantom, the track is a distinctively Wes Parker blend of grunge inspirations, mid-2000s indie jangle, and truly gorgeous falsetto.
On the inspiration behind the song itself, Parker said: “I am a really bad sleeper. I think about death a lot in these wee hours. The fact that I’m gonna have to die. ‘Neck’ is a song that encapsulates some of my racing, middle-of-the-night, insomniac thoughts. Hopefully, the feeling that even when you’re lying awake in the dark at 4AM–you know a bunch of other people are doing the exact same thing.”
An energetic, whip-crackingly short track, “Neck” sees Wes Parker evoke a particular type of nostalgic, emotive lyricism that feels familiar for any former pop-punk kid, as he sings “as I lay my head down/they never said it was easy, love/give me one last kiss goodnight.”
It’s comforting in its darkness, and warm even as it creates its own lyrical shadow.
