Instead of continuing his penchant for social protest, “Be Brave If You Can” highlights another form of strength, the one found in vulnerability and surrender. In an era when the world seems to be writhing in chaos, riddled with disinformation, war, and power gone awry, you might say that Kappen does not scream. He listens. And he sweetly tells us to wait.
Sonically, it is minimal and ambient, creating a lush playground that is at once languorous and organic. It's a song that won't demand attention, it will command. Kappen could have easily gone to elaborate lengths to reveal the moral and meaning of his story, but instead, he was like, just getting out here alive is pretty fucken heroic.
The reason this track is so addictive is that it's just so damn raw. Kappen is speaking with us, not to us. "Be Brave If You Can" is a tender, late-night discussion with a friend who carries the weight of the world on their shoulders but still manages to keep going.
