Kiwi-born, Australia-based singer-songwriter Fanfickk has announced she’s giving away her music for free on Bandcamp for the rest of the month.
Self-described as ‘upbeat melancholy mutant pop industrial cringe core’, Fanfickk has made a name for herself over the past decade with her bright, colorful imagery and distinct, dark lyrics with songs such as ‘Where You Are’, ‘Pity Party’, and cover of Korean boyband UKISS’ 2013 single ‘Standing Still’.
Originally planned for just the month of March, Fanfickk's free music offer might end up being more long-term. According to Fanfickk, giving away her music for free is part of an effort to avoid ‘weird payola stuff, playlisting and dodgy marketing’. It’s also partially motivated by her not wanting to spam social media.
More than anything, Fanfickk has said that she ‘just wanted people to find her music again’ after she pulled her entire catalog from Spotify in recent months, in protest of Spotify stopping their practice of paying royalties to small artists.
As a result of an interaction with a fan, Fanfickk has made her music easy to find via Bandcamp, so anyone looking for her music doesn’t have to go without it.
“80% of my plays from streaming platforms were from Spotify,” Fanfic admitted. It meant that she started to look for other mediums for her music, including physical ones – her last EP Tirando Basura was recorded onto mini discs.
The lead track, ‘Boring’, also has a video featuring Philippines-based K-pop dance cover group ILLEA and can be viewed here.
All of Fanfickk’s music can be downloaded for free on Bandcamp.
