Arliston’s forthcoming album, Disappointment Machine, opens with the haunting track "What Did I Think Would Happen," a poignant exploration of unrequited love. The song sets a cinematic tone, reminiscent of a gripping pre-credits scene in a James Bond film, with its initial clicks and whirs evoking the nostalgia of a VHS tape. This intimate piece captures the raw emotions of songwriter Jack Ratcliffe, whose bruised heart is laid bare with guarded vulnerability.

Jack describes it as one of his favorite songs, noting the challenge of conveying strong emotions with subtlety. He shares that they managed to hold this poignant thing in the palm of their hand "and express it with not much more than a whisper." The band emphasises authenticity, using first-take ideas to maintain spontaneity, while George highlights their focus on restraint in production.

The song builds in a strangely discordant manner, with wheezing brass and clamorous piano creating tension. Jack’s voice shifts from piercing falsetto to deeper tones, culminating in a heart-rending silence, leaving listeners eager for the full story. Disappointment Machine is set to be released in January 2024.
