BRAINHEART has released a new song called "How To Live, " encouraging people to follow their dreams and passions. Even when life is complex and uncertain, this song will give you hope and inspire you to pursue your goals. In an interview with EARMILK, BRAINHEART shared what inspired the creation of "How To Live" and how it reflects the experiences of the human pursuit of dreams and passions.
What inspired the creation of "How To Live," and how does it reflect the experiences of the human pursuit of dreams and passions?
BRAINHEART: Last year was the worst year of my life, so I wanted to start 2024 with a motivational song. "How To Live" is about what human beings go through in pursuing their passions/dreams. At some point, they feel burned out – unable to cope with the stress of holding it all together while the odds are stacked against them. What often keeps us going is the wonder of the "what if" when we reach for those stars we gaze at. Ultimately, every original success story comes with a lot of failure but also persistence never to give up. You don't know when or where your next opportunity will arrive, and you'll never know if you don't shoot your best shot.
Can you elaborate on the meaning behind the "stacking up stones with persistence" metaphor in the song and how it relates to overcoming challenges in the journey towards one's goals?
BRAIN HEART: Delicately stacking stones embody patience and an exquisite pursuit of equilibrium. It's a physical testament to creating harmony. By stacking up our stones with persistence, we can build a place where we can reach our goals.
The song mentions the importance of pushing through burnout and stress. How do you personally deal with creative burnout, and did that influence the composition of this track?
BRAINHEART: I listen to plenty of genres to get inspired. Additionally, I get inspiration from traveling, movies, and festivals/concerts. The creative process of this song was so fast and smooth. I produced the track in a day or 2; I was motivated and inspired. It has been a long time since I have been this inspired, so creating this song was fun.
In the description, you mention the element of wonder associated with reaching for the stars. How does this theme play into the motivation behind pursuing one's dreams, and how is it represented in the music?
BRAINHEART: Wondering is part of the process of reaching the stars. It happens to me daily; I wonder what will happen when I reach my goals and achieve my dreams. I think about the future a lot; I can't wait to see what will happen in a few years, and most creative minds can understand me. The song's repetitive phrase "Oh the wonder wonder" emphasizes how wondering is a massive part of being a dream chaser.
The song emphasizes the inevitability of failure on the path to success. Could you share a personal anecdote or experience that inspired this aspect of the song's message?
Brain heart: The number of failures and obstacles I've been through… So many people in the music industry and generally in life told me my music was not good enough. Sometimes it frustrates me, but I need to keep going. I make music not for fame or money. Music saved my life in so many ways, and it's my turn to make people happy and save lives. I know my music touches people, but I can't wait to touch millions of hearts and souls; I know I deserve it.
The collaboration between Brainheart and Lord & Land is described as a "serious musical match for the ages." What unique qualities does each bring to the collaboration, and how do they complement each other's artistic styles?
BRAINHEART: Caleb (the singer) and I have a magical connection. The whole process of 2 creative minds collaborating on making a piece of art is not easy, but we have a solid connection; it made the entire process delightful. Music-wise, I come from the EDM world, and Caleb comes from the folk/acoustic world, which made it unique. As I construct rich soundscapes that can transport the listener to a dream-like euphoria, Caleb steps up to the mic and unravels his inner truths, sculpting them into clever, meaningful lyrics sung in his tone of gold.
The production of "How To Live" combines elements of pop, EDM, and classic chord progressions. How did you blend these diverse musical elements to create a cohesive sound?
BRAINHEART: I listen to many genres and am always open to new sounds. In this specific track, I wanted to combine elements from different genres to make the song more exciting and unique. The best way to do it is to use several techniques from each genre and combine electronic elements with acoustic instruments.
Lord & Land's vocal style is described as gymnastic, powerful, and warm. How does his vocal delivery contribute to the song's emotional impact, and what qualities make his performance stand out?
BRAINHEART: His angelic voice and the way he sings the lyrics make you emotional. He is a great singer but also a fantastic songwriter. This guy knows how to write amazing songs that touch your soul's depth. Communication is crucial when you collaborate with other creative minds. Luckily, it was easy to communicate with him because he is open-minded and open to suggestions, so the whole process was smooth and fun.
The song transports listeners to a "dream-like euphoria." How do you aim to create a specific atmosphere or mood with your music, and what techniques or elements do you find most effective in achieving this?
BRAINHEART: To achieve that, I use a lot of atmosphere in the background, creating a dreamy, euphoric vibe. I also love combining electronic elements with live instruments; this combination can make people feel something different. When I work with singers, I always ask them to record a lot of adlibs and harmonies because these will allow me to create depth in the mix.
The lyrics in "How To Live" are described as clever and meaningful. Can you share some insights into the lyrical process and how you ensure that the words resonate with the audience more deeply?
BRAINHEART: Caleb, a.k.a. Lord & Land, wrote the lyrics. I found Caleb on Spotify and fell in love with his voice. He is such a great and underrated artist. I sent him a message via Instagram and sent him the track. I told him I wanted to create a motivational/mental health song. He loved the idea, we started working together, and he sent an idea quickly. I was hooked and loved the idea, so we continued.
