Oh and speaking of mashups, did anyone catch the mashup that was aired during the Super Bowl? Looks like mashups are starting to go mainstream, and Budweiser possibly may be leading the charge. It's the 50th edition of Mashup Mondays, a milestone in itself. Definitely proud to have been part of such a great segment and am looking forward to keeping the feature going for awhile. But y'all aren't here to read, y'all are here to listen to some mashups. Starting off this week is a mashup from The Hood Internet. Not going to lie, I've been a little underwhelmed by what they have produced lately but "Nightchain" restores my full confidence in them. I've heard Kavinsky in quite a few mashes recently (DJ Fergie Ferg in Week 39 and Wait What come to mind), but Wale's flow seems to mesh the best with the overall feel of the instrumental. Following that, we got the group that has probably the most ingenious name of the list- The Catalina Rhyme Mixers. I was finishing up this post and had forgotten to take a listen to "White Out" but was kindly reminded by a friend from DML. With a straight hip-hop/rap vibe from Tinie to Fabolous to Dem Franchize Boys, I was instantly hooked with the tempo and the sampling. Personally, Tinie's sample/flow really makes the track for me.
Other tracks that stood out to me was Trevor Morgan's "No Introduction" (you may remember this artist from last week). Can one ever go wrong with The XX? Doubtful, but Fenech Soler was a nice added touch that gave "Introduction" solid vocals that amplifies the mysterious quality of The XX. A second track that utilizes a unique sounding track is KTHRSIS, and he makes sure to take M83's "Midnight City" and surround it with all kinds of genres. Biggie? Yep. Mims? Sure. MGMT? Good quantity there. Heck, even Lil Kim makes an appearance. KTHRSIS got the idea from DJ Bahler's "Midnight Brunch", so check that track out here to compare the two. Dotcom and DJ Sweekuh collabed together and came up with a solid track titled "Spaceman's Stress" that is sure to get a good amount of plays from me. Of course, no list could be complete without a little Hall & Oates; this week's portion Hall & Oates provided by Sample Gee. Definitely a feel good vibed track that is a nice reminder of the classics.
