Generationals deliver a punchy new indie rock track "Dirt Diamond" [Video]

New Orleans-born duo Generationals are not green to the scene and have been making what they call garage-pop style music for a decade and more. Made up of musicians Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer whose mutual love for the unorthodox grew into something beyond friendship as the two embarked on a musical journey through the unbeaten path. They are true school students who stick to their guns even in this age where churning out music by the dozen is the norm, the duo often takes their time crafting music that speaks to their soul and draws the listener in. Presently they are working on their new album Heatherhead, and in the interim, they share the lead single "Dirt Diamond", along with a video by POND Creative (Soccer Mommy, TOLEDO).

The record is ripe with rich guitar riffs, thick basslines and punchy drums all underpinned by earworm melodies that exude nostalgia and warmth. The duo add that the song came from daydreams of being on the road again during the pandemic. Widmer shares: “I felt some catharsis in shouting 'Are you okay?' over the chorus and the feeling has stuck with me every day since.” Everything on the song is calculated as they draw listeners in with heartfelt lyrics, rousing grooves, entrancing harmonizations and even threw in a superb guitar solo to raise the ante.

The accompanying video directed by POND Creative harks back in time with its retro effects that use a blend of still images, pixelated effects and quick performance cuts with stylish psychedelic framing. It's a total throwback to the late '80s and quite enjoyable for what it represents as it captures a time long forgotten with a touch of modern pop elements.

"Dirt Diamond" is taken from Generationals' new album Heatherhead – out via Polyvinyl on June 2, 2023.
