New artist, Charlotte Reed who goes by the moniker of Charlø, released her first single titled, “numb” on Wednesday, September 28th. Her start in the industry is definitely an interesting one. She completely started over in life after an unfortunate ski accident that left her with a broken back. After the accident, she was immobilized for months, and instead of being stagnant, she decided to pick up the art of production through the use of Youtube videos. She turned out to be pretty good at it and went from having an unfulfilling commercial real estate career to starting her blooming career in the music industry.

The track, “numb” begins with pulsating synths that build up to high frequencies as the song continues on. Charlø includes cool delay and panning effects on her vocals, creating a deep electronic feel to the song. The song repeats the lyrics, “I've gone numb”, reflecting how she’s become desensitized to life after facing traumatic events. Charlø remains strong through this trauma singing, “Nothing can hurt me no, you'll never see me cry” inspiring fans with her fighter attitude. The unique vocal effects that Charlø use continues to distort and intensify near the end of the track, reflecting her clouded mind after her distressing accident.

Charlo also included a video with the release of this track that shows her doing mundane activities around her city. She seems to be having fun while doing so. The video is eye-catching as it is shot on VHS, giving the picture a grainy, classic feel. There is a recurring theme of a skeleton and graveyard in the video, contributing to the dark themes in the track. Charlø went to Instagram sharing small clips of behind-the-scenes footage of the video shoot and sharing her excitement for the release of the track.

Charlo is definitely one new artist to watch considering this is only her first single. She seems dedicated to her craft which is evident in the impressive and genre-bending nature of her production. She proves to us that the best art can come out of some of the most detrimental situations.
