There is no doubt that Bristol has been growing as a creative city for the past 10 years, but if you need any more proof, look no further than Natalie Holmes. Her music is a melting pot of many genres but Indie-Folk and Pop take the main focus within her unique sound. Her latest single "Floating TV" is no different and is a prime example of her powerful vocals – which have a bubblegum pop facade but are tinged with emotion and rawness.
"Floating TV" is a new sonic move for the artist. By binding different genre textures together, she creates a soundscape that is unique and distinctive, incorporating shy, timid moments next to huge crescendos. Shuffling drums make up the main framework, with jazz bass lines working hand and glove with it. On top of this chorus, drenched guitars ebb and flow between piano lines that glimmer in the mix. Her vocals are always distinctive, but more importantly paired up with well penned lyrics creating a partnership that explores bewilderment at being a young adult in today’s society.
Speaking further she says: “I have this ever-present sadness at the way the world is becoming more limiting, constantly feeding us stimulation and keeping us needing or wanting an endless cycle of stuff and achievements. This song is about rebelling I suppose – in a sweet, naive kinda way.”
Having received a lot of support for her solo material from the likes of BBC Radio 2, Record of the Day, Folk Radio, BBC Radio 6 Music, Clout and Clash, Natalie has toured up and down the UK, appearing at festivals including Isle of Wight, Dot2Dot, Bristol Harbour Festival, Barn on the Farm and Live at Leeds. Now returning with the new single and her upcoming debut album, Natalie is showcasing her best work yet – a collection of expertly put together, beautifully executed material full of depth both musically and lyrically.
