Samurai Breaks — the UK’s resident under-the-radar bass demon — has joined the mighty Hooversound Recordings imprint with a high-velocity, four-track EP. With a remix from jungle’s man-of-the-moment Coco Bryce, and a contribution from one of the most energetic artists in the UK right now, Nova Cheq, Turbo Rave Artillery is set to be one of the wildest releases you’ll hear in 2021.
“Victory Lap,” a collaboration between Samurai Breaks and Nova Cheq blends jungle tekno with acid house synths and frenzied vocals for a wicked concoction designed to destroy any dancefloor. Wholly relentless from start to finish, if the opening track is anything to go by, this EP isn’t for the faint hearted. A completely modern take on a variety of oldskool sounds, “Victory Lap” is a melting pot of nostalgia and excitement. Title track “Turbo Rave Artillery” offers a blisteringly frantic cut of hardcore breaks, brimming with siren-like sounds and euphoric, rave-ready FX. A whole load of fun and chaos in equal amounts, there’s plenty more where that came from.
Turning the EP straight on its head, “Jitterbug” strays into the grounds of footwork and grime, with samples aplenty. Sirens, till registers and choppy vocals aside, the bassline alone delivers peak-time rave energy; everything else serves as the icing on the cake. It’s 100mph, never letting up, hoover-filled rave royalty, and we for one can’t wait to hear this one on a set of Funktion Ones. Coco Bryce steps up on remix duties, lending the track a jungle-influenced sound, and stripping back the intensity ever-so-slightly. A match made in dance music heaven, a jungle X grime crossover has never sounded so good. With each track bringing something completely fresh and equally mad to the table, there haven’t been many EPs this year that come close to matching the energy of Turbo Rave Artillery.
