In her latest single, singer-songwriter-producer Devan confronts and calls out condescension. “Without You” is an anthem for those with that proud ex that resurfaces at convenient times.
Also one-third of Toronto indie band Wild Rivers, Devan’s solo career is steadily climbing thanks to a handful of alt-pop bops. “Without You” is an obvious standout to the these releases so far; highlighting her soft vocals while spellbinding us at the chorus with that unexpected heavy rhythm.
If you’ve ever had an unsavory memory slide into your DMs, Devan can relate. “‘Without You” captures the immediate frustration that comes with an unwelcome message from someone who hurt you,” the singer comments on the single. “Yet then there’s the elated realization that they don’t have a hold on you anymore. He [her ex] conveniently started messaging me saying he loves my music and is “so proud” of me, like he felt he could claim some sort of ownership over what I had accomplished.” An all too familiar feeling for many, Devan sings proudly in "Without You" that she is thriving five years later— not to mention a blossoming solo career that's only just getting started.
