The beloved San Francisco indie trio Hot Flash Heat Wave are back with an atmospheric pop jazz-funk single titled "m o t i o n s." Premiering exclusively with EARMILK below, the track is streaming now on all DSPs and is the latest single off a new LP set to drop later this fall.
Made up of Adam Abildgaard, Nick Duffy, and Ted Davis, Hot Flash Heat Wave have built a loyal following by critics and fans alike with an unhindered sound that dances between indie-pop, surf rock, and psychedelia. But "m o t i o n s" is a dazzling exhibition of the bands more existential songwriting capabilities. This latest single features evocative moments of profound tranquility that feature dense synths and an untamable funk-laden bassline. It's a sensory overload of atmospheric proportions but HFHW hone in the vast dimensions of sounds to deliver a fluid track that engulfs listeners in a dreamlike trance. The surrealistic vocal delivery gently tells the story of a shimmering pop fantasy, while that funk-dripped bassline keeps the track moving along majestically.
Hot Flash Heat Wave is a rare talent and "m o t i o n s" is a fantastical pop meets jazz-funk soundscape of cosmic proportions. In their own words, Hot Flash Heat Wave shares, ‘m o t i o n s’ was inspired by the end of a very important relationship in my life, which was on and off over a number of years and left me feeling stagnant and disconnected, like I was repeating the same empty patterns. It’s a play on the phrase “going through the motions,” toying with the intersection of movement and emotion. I wanted to express this feeling of love’s futility that I was left with, going through so much with someone and becoming so close just to realize that it wasn’t meant to be and learning how to start again.
