For many of us, childhood was full of innocence, wonderment, and vulnerability. We looked for guidance and were taken care of by our parental figures, who often paved the way and protected us from this wild world. Baltimore born and now Los Angeles based dream-pop artist Lauren Lakis explores this concept in her latest single "Sail Away." Like many, Lakis was forced at a young age to become the "parent" to her mother, who suffered from addiction. She felt helpless as a result of growing up and often felt like her voice was not heard in the chaos of her mother's issues.
On "Sail Away", the prolific songwriter runs with the notion of returning to her inner child, aligning with that special side of herself that longs for connection, is trusting and playful. Lakis confides, "This song explores my longing for having had an adult like me around, when I was a child…as well as the anger I’ve carried with me for having missed out. I’ve had to accept that no one can go back in time and fix that for me." Sonically, "Sail Away" features melancholy garage-rock guitars, echoing vocals, and goth-inspired soundscapes, creating an irresistibly haunting affair.
Lauren Lakis has crafted a catalog of shoegaze dream pop meets garage grunge rock tunes that are raw and profound. Her vast experiences seep into her writing and she is often unabashedly candid. From teaching English in Eastern Europe to taking on major acting roles in Los Angeles, to being a stripper and yoga teacher in Portland, he has lived a rich life that infiltrates her storytelling lyrics. "Sail Away" is off of her upcoming album Daughter Language set for release in late January 2021.
