After a recent tour alongside The Black Keys for their 2019 Let's Rock tour, Delicate Steve is holding true to his name with a soft, gentle insertion in today's busy conversations the only way he knows how: bringing strange, silly, and imaginative sounds to life.
The Black Keys are not the only band to seek the talents of Delicate Steve to either join them on tour or see time recording in the studio. The largely-instrumentalist has performed on stage with acts such as Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco, and Dr. Dog. Not to mention lending a hand for guitar work on Amen Dunes' Freedom, one of the most acclaimed albums of 2018, collaborating with Paul Simon, and having a track sampled by Kanye West.
The New Jersey product released "Some Hope," a track designed to embody feelings of "unqualified joy, positivity, […] and being a fool." A large part of Delicate Steve's mantra is not taking one's self too seriously. “It’s about optimism and about our place within the human pageant.”
"Some Hope" is the first of three singles expected to come from Delicate Steve, otherwise known as, Steve Marion, through ANTI- records after releasing a three-song live EP earlier this year.
The song kicks off with siren-sounding guitar cries that couple with melodic brass reverberations. As Delicate Steve states in a release that pairs with the new single, the song is an "ode to melody, saxophone, King Curtis and Sam Cooke."
The sustained bass and piano chords go along with an upbeat hi-hat to create a backbone in which the guitar whales over until culminating into a bursting, fuzzy solo oozing with passion. It sounds like a synth might make a wild appearance, however, we cannot discount Delicate Steve's spectrum of sounds he is capable of making on guitar. “Everyone thinks my guitars sound like synths,” he says. “But I was thinking more along the lines of Kanye West’s vocals, where it’s a distorted and auto-tuned room mic.”
While fans of Delicate Steve can look forward to plenty of new material still to be released this year, all proceeds from "Some Hope" purchased via Bandcamp will be donated to Color Of Change, an organization that designs campaigns to end practices that unfairly hold black people back and champions solutions that move everyone forward.
