While some people may consider the heyday of afrobeat music to be behind us, groups like KOKOROKO are here to show us the enduring vitality of the music, along with its possibilities for the future. The London eight-piece collective has been busy in recent years, releasing their breakout track “Abusey Junction” on Brownswood Recordings’ We Out Here compilation, which has led to numerous live shows and the release of their debut self-titled EP in 2019. The group has returned with the captivating new single “Carry Me Home,” the first offering from their forthcoming debut album.
In the words of band leader Sheila Maurice-Grey in a press statement, “Before melody or harmony, there’s rhythm.” This simple yet profound credo is at the heart of the KOKOROKO sound and pays proper homage to forbears like Fela Kuti and Dele Sosimi, the latter of whom provided the inspiration for the new track. The all-star ensemble honors the rhythmic tradition of afrobeat with effortless ease while weaving in elements of the modern day London sound. Heavenly vocals, fiery horn lines, and an inescapable groove in the rhythm section define the song that is beautifully suited for dancers and listeners alike. “Carry Me Home” shows KOKOROKO’s mastery in highlighting the heritage of afrobeat while shepherding the music into brilliantly uncharted territories.
