Earlier this week, Mall Grab surprised fans with a second release under his real name Jordon Alexander titled Truth. The drop came with absolutely no context, no promotion or "BiG AnNoUnCeMeNt cOmInG sOoN" posts from MG. To make it even more obscure, Jordon merely posted it to his Instagram story without a caption or explanation, now disappeared into the ether.
Truth features two tracks that are the faultless sequel to The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, released on Mall Grab’s new imprint Looking For Trouble. The first track — which I actually feel should be referred to as a song because it’s so beautiful — ‘Objects of My Affection’ uncovers a new layer of the man we know as Mall Grab. It’s a melancholic piano piece laden with heavy chords and smooth synths. Despite it coming from Jordan Alexander AKA Mall Grab, I wouldn’t classify it as anything electronic or dance. This is straight up a sublime contemporary piano production.
‘Truth’, the title track, is more of an experimental number. Falling somewhere between downtempo, electronic and super chill trap beats, ‘Truth’ has a wistful and contemplative, yet sultry feel to it. A slow beat, quick rinses and some keys are evidence that simplicity is key.
This is an exciting release because it’s so different than what Mall Grab is known for. He’s proving to be an incredibly versatile producer, and his mixing is flawless — if I may add. We’re seeing another side of MG and given that Truth was released with no context, I can’t help but creative a narrative myself.
When he first released The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, the first ever release under his real name, he wrote “These songs were written over the last couple months of what was one of, if not the most turbulent, formative and important years of my life. […] The b side “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter” named after Carson Mcullers’ 1940 novel, samples the film adaptation and is a melancholy instrumental journey recalling endless hours spent daydreaming looking out train and car windows around the globe.”
Listening to Truth, I can’t help but feel like this is a much deeper part of Jordon. He has really been blowing up over the last few years: a lot of shows and travelling, a lot of time in huge crowds then a lot of time alone. This music gives shape to that other part of him and his life. It’s a huge contrast between the Moogie EP he just released today with Nite Fleit. If you’re into astrology, I feel like Jordon Alexander = moon sign and Mall Grab = sun/rising. If you know, you know.
I think he’s putting out this music under his real name because his life is probably getting so crazy yet amazing, yet super overwhelming, that this is something really real that he can hold on to. His real name.This music that represents who he is when he’s alone. Maybe this music is what grounds him, or reminds him who of who he is, or reminds him why he loves music. Pretty deep stuff, right? Who knows though, I could be completely wrong LOL.
