Phoenix musician Secret Attraction has been making a minor splash this past year with his infectious brand of synth funk and 80's Prince-inspired pop. Releasing his MELT EP on chillwave and future funk label Stratford Ct last August, and more recently this April's Always EP, Wise has premiered with EARMILK today his latest EP, Promises. Anchored by lead single "Sleepless", it's a hazy, wavy slice of beach pop, a long way from the dry Arizona heat where Wise calls home. Perhaps this drives his desire to create hypnagogic funk fusions. Ultimately "Sleepless" shows us that he is more than happy to soundtrack our collective fantasies about cruising down the PCH or waxing nostalgic about summers past.
Elsewhere on the EP, the title track is a brief but chill tune led by phasered vocals and some lounge-like electric piano chords. "Alright" is the longest track on the EP, lit up by filtered disco percussion and the I-miss-you refrain of "Can we go back now? Can we go back?" Over email, Wise told me the Promises EP promises (pun intended) to be "a fun, emotional, lofi type of pop album". He hopes it's one that "listeners could relate to finally. Something you can sing along to." It also features a collaboration with fellow funk friend and Keats Collective member Rollergirl.
