Just as we New Yorkers are psyching ourselves up to take the sardine-can-on-rails (AKA LIRR) up to the Hamptons for the very last long weekend of summer, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Josh Tobias gives us “Beachside Lover". As an aptly timed LDW anthem, "Beachside Lover" tells us it’s okay to hold onto our summer [loves] just a little bit longer.
Born in Woodmere, NY, Tobias learned guitar from his father at a young age and began singing after hearing R&B Funkmasters James Brown and Prince lay it down. Years later, armed with a keyboard birthday gift from his brother, he jetted off to college where house music was introduced to his repertoire.
You can hear the blend of his musical upbringing throughout “Beachside Lover” – it has a sassy sax, sparks of retro synth, and soulful vocals that somehow make the notion of a one-night stand summer fling seem a little more classy. The track was produced by Miami’s Alex Delicata and has an old-school, South Beach feel offset by Tobias’s funky-fresh signature sound.
Of the track, Tobias says, “‘Beachside Lover’ is about that endless summer weekend where you fall in love with the night and forgot about your broken heart… at least until the rum wears off. It’s about the energy of the vibe, the rhythm of the beat and the inner freak inside all of us.”
Josh’s EP will be coming out in 2016, and we’re excited to see all the surprises that this genre-blending mastermind has up his sleeve. In the meantime stream “Beachside Lover” while you make it count this weekend, and get to know him via the socials below.
