Mac Miller's "Pet Sounds" honors the late Sean Price

When I heard the news that Sean Price passed away last week, I was devastated. Whether you discovered his work via Heltah Skeltah, Boot Camp Clik, or had his solo projects like Monkey Barz stuck on repeat, you can't deny the Brooklyn emcee's tenacity on the mic. What made P so memorable was his attitude and outlook on life. I never got the chance to meet him, but friends who have known him for years have told me he was the kind of cat that always kept it real.

If you were acting foolish, he wouldn't hesitate to call you out (to this day, "gangsta rappers can't fight so they rap about guns" is one of my favourite bars in hip hop history because it perfectly captures the mentality of many artists) on your nonsense. Although he's no longer with us, Price's energy and spirit will always live on. To make sure his legacy didn't go unnoticed, Mac Miller was kind enough to dig through his personal vaults to drop "Pet Sounds," a collab they worked on some time ago.

Over a mesmerizing, hypnotic beat from the extremely underrated Nottz, Mac comes through with a series of seemingly nonsensical stoner bars. But the track takes a complete 180 when Price gets on the beat. This pairing might sound strange on paper, but somehow it works surprisingly well. Let's hope that "Pet Sounds" is the first of many tracks to be released from the late rapper. The kind folks at Duck Down Records have started a campaign to raise money for Sean's wife and their children, so head over to their Crowdrise page and give what you can to support them in their time of need.
