Until the Ribbon Breaks revolutionizes indie with their new hip-hop infused track

I wish I was still building my TCS NYC Marathon playlist because the latest offering from English electro-indie three-piece Until the Ribbon Breaks would have unquestionably made the cut.

“Revolution Indifference” ft. hip-hop duo Run The Jewels has the perfect foot-pounding BPM and a rap riff c/o RTJ that will give your steps a little swagger. It starts slowly with a buzzy synthesized beat, introducing a digitalized high-pitched bot vox before Peter Lawrie Winfield starts doing his singing thing. But I don’t really think “singing” is the choice word per se – his freestyle, effortless way of lyricizing is like really refined spoken word or melodic beat poetry.

The song is about how we’re glued to our phones these days with no regard to what’s happening outside the digital bubble, resulting in a rather apathetic culture. And even though the topic is a relevant and seemingly serious one, UTRB communicates it with a sense of sardonic wit. My favorite line is "Politics, we never vote / cause you won't hang yourself if you don't choose a rope, no." referencing the safety net that is indifference. The chorus is simple and singable, the content is relatable, and the beat makes me want to run 26.2 miles.

UTRB’s debut full-length album comes out on January 20 and features this track in addition to others we’ve loved, and reviewed – like “Goldfish” for instance. And their North American tour with London Grammar also kicks off in the New Year (dates below). Lots to care about here, so get clicking.
