Common and Mary J. Blige's "Come Close" is one of my favorite Common tracks ever. Everything about it transports me to easier times and sunny weather. There's something about the combination of Common's signature poetic style and MJB's killer voice that resonated so well with listeners. With stylistic similarities to the legendary Erykah Badu, UK songstress Ego Ella May is an appropriate fit for a new rework, and the result is a new project with producer Mini-D titled MDMay (see what they did there?).
Their syrupy "Come Close" reinterpretation oozes sensuality without much effort. Mini-D relies on Ella May's soulful vocals to create the smoky haze permeated only by shifting, experimental percussion. As a lighter version, it's a far cry from the original, yet it holds its own weight as its own entity. Less is definitely more for Ella May and Mini-D.
