The nine-song album, recorded entirely in Sam Gelston’s bedroom, "See Through Now," is a raw and thoughtful listen that turns everyday confusion, emotional struggles, and life’s unexpected moments. Written, performed, and recorded by Gelston, the project is a powerful celebration of imperfections, exploring the depth of relationships, the complexity of mental health, the significance of life and death, and the quest for meaning in an uncertain world.
Mixed and mastered by David Chapman at Endless Noise Studios, Sam Gelston begins with “I’m Coming to LA to Kill You," a playful, heartfelt track about friendship, distance, and the strange ways we deal with change. Followed by “Who You Are," this track is more about self-reflection and the emotional loneliness you can feel in a relationship. “IDKY” is more about reconnecting after a broken friendship and all those complicated feelings about establishing trust again.
On “Lazy Too," Gelston explores an honest moment through personal struggles with depression and self-doubt. Sam also explores identity and perception on tracks such as “Car Ride” and “Meet Me Downtown,” where he contemplates the need for social validation and the challenge of staying true to oneself in a loud, modern world. “Somethings Last a While” is a showcase of Gelston’s creative storytelling, taking things everyone feels and making them something more original with unexpected images and ideas.
The emotional centrepiece of "See Through Now" is “Make It Make Sense”, a powerful closing statement that sums up Gelston’s experience in the wake of a kidney failure diagnosis. The track fits the album's themes of mortality, resilience, and looking for clarity. "See Through Now" is an honest alternative music release that celebrates imperfection and emotional complexity, as well as the strange beauty of being human.
