Toronto DJ and producer Zorza has released "Haunted," a new single and music video on 4ever Music, her independent label distributed through Universal Music Group Canada. The track serves as the first single from her debut album, due later this year, and signals a new chapter for the artist after the label's opening run of releases with Belgian duo Promis3.
"Haunted" hits with heavy drums, soft layered vocals, and intricate synth work. Club-ready on the surface, the subject matter runs considerably deeper, pulling from Zorza's own experience navigating online identity and the gap between who you are and who you build for the internet.
"This song is about my relationship with self reinvention relating to the internet in particular and the complexities around it," Zorza explains. "I've spent a lot of time thinking about which parts of myself I want to share online, and how it sometimes feels like I'm creating some sort of persona purely for the online space. I've only really shown my 'DJ persona' online but there's more to me, as an artist and person than just being a DJ."
A music video drops alongside the single, staging Zorza as someone haunted by the spirit of her own DJ identity. "I thought it would be a fun concept to be 'haunted' by the spirit of a DJ and play on virality," she says. "It's easy to feel haunted as an artist by the idea that our true selves aren't sometimes enough to break through the algorithm, but at the same time I find it really exciting that there's this opportunity to change and create a specific persona to share aspects of yourself on the internet and see what people connect with."
The release arrives in the middle of a packed summer for Zorza. Recent dates include Fvded in the Park in Vancouver and Teletech x Amnesia in Ibiza, while upcoming stops include a hometown 4ever Music showcase in Toronto on July 24th and the label's LA debut on July 25th in partnership with Code Red. Festival appearances at IleSoniq in Montreal on August 9th and North Coast Music Festival in Chicago on September 5th round out a busy stretch across North America, Europe, and South America.
