Aussie pop punk band Stand Atlantic sounds lovelier than they have in years on their latest single, “Velcro.”
The song dropped on Wednesday and marks the first new music from the Sydney quartet following their 2024 album Was Here. The band described the track as the beginning of their “lovergirl era.” It’s clear to see why from the song’s lyrics.
Stand Atlantic’s chief songwriter and frontwoman, Bonnie Fraser, has developed a reputation for not writing love songs, which the band previously challenged with “Love U Anyway” from Was Here.
“Velcro” takes it a step further with its tone. It describes the all-consuming feeling of wanting to be with someone but not knowing how to tell them. Fraser executes this perfectly by finding unique ways to say well-worn romantic statements, making the lyrics infectiously catchy and easy to sing along to.
The composition recalls the band’s early work, particularly the upbeat sound of their 2018 album Skinny Dipping.
Jonno Panichi’s percussion makes great use of the full drum set, Miki Rich’s bass is bouncy, Fraser’s singing is more sincere here, while keeping her usual grit and the addition of acoustic guitar adds depth. But the electric guitar is the true star here, especially as David Potter gets to do a ripping solo during the bridge.
“Velcro” signals a shift in a more positive direction for Stand Atlantic compared to the harder edge of their last few records. While there is no official word yet on a new album, the song proves the band's in it for the long haul.
