Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, singer-songwriter Heather Mall is a classically trained “songbird” who recently released her debut 12-song album, Calliope, which explores themes of loss, heartbreak, and self-discovery.
Mall says Calliope is “about navigating life after loss and heartbreak and the beauty of re-discovering yourself. Remembering that the love that exists inside of you can’t be taken away is very comforting.”
Mall goes on to say, “I wanted to create an album that was authentic to my own personal experiences in life these past 5 or 6 years and turn it into art that the listener can relate to and realize that they aren’t alone in their hurt, their grief, or their joy that they might not share out loud. This album is that reminder that you’re never going through life alone, someone will always understand, and if you feel like you can’t find that person, these songs are here for you to sit with and process those emotions. Calliope is ultimately about love. My grandparents, Gus and Angie, are the inspiration behind this entire project – and how they’ve inspired and believed in me my whole life. I’ve grown up watching the greatest love I’ve ever known, and the songs on this album revolve around that love, how I aspire to find a love that I don’t have to settle for, and how to navigate life without them around.”
Within those 12 songs sits “Strawberry Cinnamon,” a standout track that captures the emotional warmth and intimacy woven throughout the record. With a sound reminiscent of ’90s ballads that feel like a nostalgic hug, and vocal intentionality and poignancy akin to Sara Bareilles, Mall carries a presence that feels wise beyond her years.
The instrumental gently carries Mall’s sentiments forward, but it’s ultimately her vocal performance and lyricism that take center stage, with the production serving as a subtle yet effective backdrop to her storytelling.
“Strawberry Cinnamon” is the kind of track that begins gently and leaves the listener curious to dive deeper into the artist’s entire discography.
Mall is currently writing and recording her next EP, Connections & Coincidences, slated for release in Fall 2026, and hopes to embark on her first Midwest tour shortly after.
